X1 GPIO Question

I am just wondering if it is possible to boost the voltage of the GPIO pins from the default 3.3v to 5v? If so, would that need to be done through software or can it be done in the BIOS settings?

No, the CPU GPIO port is only support 1.8 or 3.3V

You need some transistor, mosfet or voltage translation devices to support +5V devices. To make the board support 5V GPIO would cost a fortune in re-design. We still use +5V device in the automotive and military industry but for most other area it is an obsolete approach.
There are devices that run at 1.7V which is likely the next step.

Supporting 5V can be achieved by adding an external level conversion module, which is very convenient and cost-effective
