Questions about the NestDisk NAS product

I am interested in purchasing the NestDisk Mini PC NAS to use as a NAS, but I have a few
questions I would like to ask you.

  1. If it operates in NAS Storage mode, I assume the other three modes—Soft Router,
Office PC, and Light Entertainment Terminal—are disabled; however, in NAS Storage mode,
can the three USB ports, two HDMI ports, the full-function USB-C port, and the audio jack still
    be used?
  2. The product description states that it supports up to four 4TB NVMe drives (totaling
16TB). Further down, an image shows the SSD slots labeled “SSDn PCIex2” (where n ranges
from 1 to 4, indicating the fourth slot supports SATA in addition to NVMe). However, the
“Storage” section of the Quick Specification Overview states that a single slot supports only up
to 1TB (PCIe 3.0x2). If this latter information is correct, the NestDisk’s maximum capacity
would be 4TB rather than 16TB; where is the error?
  3. Is there a manual explaining how to run multiple virtual machines on OMV using KVM
    technology?
  4. Does it support acting as a Tailscale client? The description mentions VPN access via
OpenVPN, but I already have a Tailscale network and wanted to integrate the NestDisk into it.
  5. The “Power” section of the Quick Specification Overview indicates a 19V requirement;
can it operate safely at 20V?
  6. The product wiki states:
    a. It supports 16GB of memory (standard 12GB). Is it possible to upgrade from
12GB to 16GB while retaining the existing 12GB?
    b. OMV comes pre-installed; compatible with Windows 11, Linux, and Ubuntu. I
assume that to install these latest operating systems, I would need to follow the
procedure outlined in the “System installation support” section of the documentation.
This basically entails disabling booting from the eMMC—where I assume OMV is preinstalled—and installing Windows 11 or Linux on a partition of the NVMe drives.
    i. Could Windows 11 or Linux be installed on the eMMC after removing
OMV and formatting the drive? Is there any documentation explaining how to
    carry out this process?
ii. Regarding that documentation, the first link (Tutorial link) opens a
document in Chinese; is there an English version available?
  • All of these ports can be used. Running in NAS mode simply makes the device more specialized for that purpose; in fact, it supports running all three modes simultaneously. For more information, you can look up topics related to “intel N100 personal DIY NAS.”

  • At the time, we only tested up to that capacity. In practice, it can support a single 8TB SSD. However, you need to consider the physical installation space.

  • For OMV-related tutorials, you can refer to: Installation — openmediavault 8.x.y documentation

  • Yes, it can. In fact, it is a Debian-based computer. If you are familiar with Linux, you can install it yourself.

  • We do not recommend using a power supply with a different voltage.

  • 6a. No, the memory is soldered on board and cannot be replaced. We previously offered a 16GB version, but due to the high cost of storage, we have temporarily suspended production of that specification.

  • 6b. You can treat it as a regular computer. As long as you know how to use a PE system to install an operating system, you can install any OS you like.
